I know I’ve blogged about this before, but since the New Year is upon us it’s time for reflection, resolutions and thinking about ways to improve our lives in 2011. The economy is still in the toilet and unemployment rates are still way too high. Is going back to school the ultimate answer to our money woes? If I increase my skill set, will I be more valuable in the marketplace? Hard to say, and the competition is tougher than ever out there.
If I could turn back the hands of time, perhaps I would have continued down the path with my love for theatre but maybe I would have double-majored and gotten a business degree as well. Now more than ever, artists need to be savvy when it comes to business and taking care of themselves when it comes to contracts and negotiations and such. Some of us learn the hard way, so it isn’t at all unreasonable to get your degree in what you love and in what you need.
It’s never too late to learn. It’s never too late to go back to school. It’s never too late to do anything. 2011 is upon us, and it’s not too late!

I always think the same thing! I should have gotten a business degree or a marketing degree when I was in school. Oh well...like you said, it's never too late! Who knows what 2011 will bring? Cheers!
Yep, right there w/ you on the business degree thing. I've given it a good effort over the years, but at this point in my life, I doubt I'll ever finish that danged degree. Instead, I've done the reinventing process more times than I care to count. The world has changed in that regard so much that even those with multiple degrees are scrambling to reinvent.
I think that creative personalities seem to roll with the punches a bit better in that respect. The economy definitely makes the life of a freelancer challenging, but I'm stubborn and I enjoy what I do too much to not keep plugging along. :)

When I break out in song, my wife typically asks me, "What did you do with the money," implying that I surely did not spend it on singing lessons. I tell her that I spent it on accounting classes,
which worked out for me when I got a B.S. in accounitng and was lucky enough to get a job at a place where I continued to work for the next thirty years.
I remember switching from being a Chemistry major, my first college major, since I was not doing as well as I would have liked to do in the chemistry, biology, and math classes. I switched to majoring in Political Science, intending to eventually go to law school. After some ups and downs with my grades, I said to myself: Do I want to spend three more years in school (going to law school) after I complete my degree in PolySci? Am I nuts?
So I looked through the college catalog and chose a major that seemed to be a fit for me (I am pretty good with numbers) and that struck me as practical enough that I would be able to get a decent job without going through any additional schooling past a bachelor's degree. Luckily, even int the fairly slow job market in the Summer of 1971, my Accounting degree worked for me. (I worked hard for it, and it worked for me.)
Debbie, good luck on your quest, whether it be staying in Portand and developing some opportunities there, or returning to school.
